Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research
The goal of the Ph.D. area of emphasis in Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research is to provide the individual with a knowledge base and extensive research skills necessary to conduct pharmacoeconomic, pharmacoepidemiologic, health services, and drug policy evaluations. The purpose of this program is to train individuals who can contribute to the knowledge bases of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. Such contributions should ultimately benefit the role of pharmacists in providing society with the safe, effective, and efficient use of pharmaceutical agents. Graduates of the program will have many career options. Academia, the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies, and contract research organizations are continuously seeking qualified pharmaceutical outcomes researchers.POR Curriculum
POR graduate students will be required to complete core coursework as well as courses in a chosen area of emphasis. Areas of emphasis are pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, health services research, and drug policy evaluations. The core curriculum consists of statistics, research methods, epidemiology, and general courses in health services research.Examinations and Dissertation
Following the completion of core courses, students must successfully complete preliminary examinations. Students then select an area of emphasis for further study, and complete required and elective courses in that area.When all required and elective course work is complete, students will be eligible to sit for comprehensive examinations. Upon successful completion of the comprehensive exam, the student will then begin their work on a dissertation as a candidate for the PhD degree.
Following the successful completion of all coursework and examinations, the student will complete a dissertation based on original investigation and showing mature scholarship. The dissertation must be approved by the studentŐs dissertation committee, and must meet all requirements of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences program in Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as all requirements of the UCD Graduate School.
